A much-loved gunboat of the Second World War is bought from the scrapyard in peacetime and put to use as a cross-channel smuggling vessel by some of its former crew. As time goes on and the contraband becomes more sinister, some crew begin to sense that unusual mechanical faults are caused by the ship herself, acting up out of resentment of the ill use she is being put to.
