Scarlet Street (1945)

Film details

Chris, a trusted, elderly company cashier stuck in a frustrating marriage, who paints as a hobby, falls in love with a beautiful woman, Kitty, who thinks he is a wealthy painter. Kitty and her rough boyfriend Johnny play on Chris's infatuation, with Kitty stringing him along with a vague promise of romance while getting him to embezzle money for her to get by on (as the jobbing actress she claims to be). She moves into an expensive art studio apartment, where Chris goes to paint. Johnny eventually realises that Chris's paintings are worth good money, and he and Kitty start selling it, passing it off as Kitty's own. Yet when Chris's wife recognises some of her husband's pictures in a gallery window, the whole deception stands ready to come undone in the most violent ways.
