During the Peninsula War, a British officer helps the Spanish transport a huge gun to the city of Avila in order to breach the walls of the stronghold.

The following statement regarding the story appears after the opening credits: 'it is 1810...the French legions of Napoleon smash across Spain. Crushed and bleeding...the Spanish army retreats into the darkest page of a nation's history...'
