The Physician (1928)

Film details

The story is based on the theory that a dipsomaniac can never permanently regain mental control. A man, who, because he knows of the evils of alcohol, turns temperance reformer and is sincere in his efforts to warn the rising generation of the dangers of drink. Unfortunately he himself has lapses and comes under the influence of a girl whom he has betrayed. His fiancee, a clergyman's daughter, ascribes his occasional strange manner to some secret illness and insists on calling in a specialist who, immediately diagnosing the disease and being in love with the girl, is forced to take a decision to maintain the dipsomaniac in his deception of Edana and submerge his own affection for her. A crisis develops when "Jessie's" father recognises the reformer as the man who led his daughter astray, and under mental strain, Amphiel collapses and plunges into low London life with "Jessie". Edana sees his degradation with her own eyes, and his sudden death in a night club averts what might have been a tragedy for her and leaves the way open for the beginning of a romance with the doctor.
