No Way Back (1949)

Film details

Johnnie 'The Croucher' Thompson, after losing a fight, is told by his doctor that one of his eyes has been damaged and that he must stop fighting. Thompson becomes a drunk and down-and-out as a consequence. Meeting an old flame, Beryl, who has become involved with the 'spiv' gangster Joe Sleak, Thompson is offered work by the latter. However, when Sleak becomes jealous owing to the renewal of the relationship between Beryl and Thompson, Sleak plans on setting up Thompson to be caught by the police during a hold-up he has planned. Beryl informs the police of the hold-up and prevents Thompson from going. Sleak, the only one of his gang to escape the trap, manages to get back to his flat where Beryl and Thompson are waiting. But with the police in pursuit, all three flee and are eventually holed up in a warehouse. Surrounded by the police, Beryl shoots Sleak, and then she and Thompson walk out together to be gunned down by the awaiting police.
