In an Anglo-American camp at the end of World War II American Lieutenant Winston shot a British sergeant in front of 11 witnesses. He is to be tried for murder. Barney Adams, detailed to handle the defence, is forewarned that the verdict must be 'guilty'. He believes Winston to be insane and Kate Davray, a nurse in the psychiatric department confirms that Dr. Kaufman's report has been rejected by the Lunacy Commission. Barney persuades Kaufman and the British psychiatrist, Major Kensington, to testify in court. Kaufman is killed in a crash on his way there but Major Kensington gives medical evidence of paranoia. Winston breaks down and is lead away completely insane.
