Magnificent Doll (1946)

Film details

Young Dolley Payne is married against her wishes to Quaker John Todd, who dies in a yellow fever epidemic, leaving her a mother and widow. She opens a boarding house which attracts rising politicians Aaron Burr and James Madison. Dolley and Burr fall in love, but she eventually sees that his ideals are wrong-headed, and she falls instead for Madison, who has loved her all along. Madison goes on to be president while Burr becomes a traitor, hoping to finish the United States and become a dictator. When Burr cheats his way out of a death penalty for treason, Dolley saves him from a lynching by convincing the mob to obey the rule and law and simply turn their backs on Burr, leaving him in obscurity, because Burr would love them to take the law into their own hands as the first step towards his destruction of US civilization.
