A remote province in China 1947. Story of an American pilot who crash-landed in China during the Second World War and who joined forces with the Chinese Warlord Yang who saved him. During a raid Yang's bandits kill a priest and already fed up with being forced to work for Yang Carmody sees his chance to escape. He takes on the identity of the priest and heads for St Mary's Mission. Nurse Anne Scott is attracted to him, but tries to suppress her feelings believing him to be a priest. Carmody actually starts to act like a priest, and on the advice of a Methodist minister in whom he confides, he writes confessing everything to the Bishop. When Yang catches up with him he protects those in the Mission and gambles successfully with Yang, gaining both his own freedom and the safety of the Mission. Although he has done wrong, his "ministry" has been to the good. With everything in the open he and Anne can follow their true feelings.
