Alan Breck, leader of the Scottish rebellion against the English, finds that young David Balfour has witnessed one of his men shoot a tax collector. Breck keeps the boy quiet. Later, David's uncle has him kidnapped and made cabin boy on a boat. Breck is a passenger. Their paths cross again when Breck is accused of the tax collector's murder and David gives evidence to help him. Breck leaves the country, but David becomes Laird of Balfour.
