Nicolas Whistler, a young, Czech-speaking writer, is taken off the dole and engaged as a junior executive in a glass works. He is sent to Prague, ostensibly on a trade mission but in reality as spy. He meets his contact, gets the formula and falls in love with his glamorous driver, Vlasts, the daughter of the chief of the Communist counter-espionage service. His contact is liquidated and Nicolas, aided by Vlasts, eventually reaches the British Embassy. He is put on a plane home and finds himself next to a Communist delegate to a trade mission to Aldermaston. It is Vlasts. Based on the novel, Night of Wenceslas by Lionel Davidson.
