Wartime detective thriller. In 1944, during the Second World War, the eccentric Inspector Cockrill of Scotland Yard dictates his account of a murder investigation he has conducted at a country hospital (as told in flashback). The first victim was a postman injured by a V2 bomb, who then died on the operating table. Tensions romantic and professional abound among the team of doctors and nurses involved in the operation. When someone claims that the postman's death was neither natural nor an accident, a second murder soon follows. Cockrill arrives to investigate with a disarming blend of insight and humour. Following another dramatic incident, Cockrill sets up a new version of the original operation, in the hopes that some clue will help unmask the killer.
