Synopsis

Conflict occurs when a young East German Communist functionary goes to a village which has not yet voluntarily embraced collectivisation and comes up against hostility from the farmers, in particular Hermann. They quarrel, and Hermann flees in the hope of reaching West Berlin. A Swiss journalist picks him up on the road and helps him. Meanwhile, the Communist official Claus Baade runs into problems with his friends and colleagues, and he too decides to head for Berlin. All three encounter each other just before they reach there.
