Synopsis
Set in the 1860's in Bengal where there is a strong tradition of the Mother Goddess worship. Doyamayee is a young Hindu bride in an upper class family. Her husband Uma is a university student in Calcutta. Whilst he is away, his father dreams that Doyamayee is the incarnation of the goddess Kali and she is elevated and worshipped as such. A process of alienation begins and Doyamayee cannot take the pressure. On his return, her husband is shocked at the situation and persuades her to escape with him but it is too late - Doya is suffering from a split psyche and commits suicide.
