Terry Blessing's lucky day starts with winning the jackpot from a fruit machine on the way to work and continues with lucky bets all the morning. At lunch time he meets the unknown friend of an old flame who decamps leaving seven year old Alfie who calls him 'Dad'. After winning in a poker session he arrives back late at work with Alfie and gets the sack. Taking Alfie home to his married sister Terry spends a successful evening with Hartley at the dogs where he meets Claire. At a roulette party Terry still wins but Claire and her escort outwit him leaving him senseless and penniless. He gets home to hear he has won a raffle and to find Alfie asleep in his bed.
