Cover Girl (1944)

Film details

Rusty Parker is a showgirl who dances at Danny McGuire's small nightspot in Brooklyn. She is also seeing Danny romantically. They and their friend Genius (a singer/comedian at Danny's) order oysters each Friday, hoping they'll find a pearl one day, indicating that they're about to hit the big time. When Rusty hears that the fashion magazine Vanity is looking for a new face to be the cover girl of its anniversary edition, she auditions and, despite being sabotaged by a rival, ends up catching the eye of the magazine's wealthy owner, who as a young man was briefly involved in a romance with Rusty's stage-star grandmother, Maribelle Hicks. Now a famous cover girl, Rusty brings big crowds to Danny McGuire's, but she soon finds herself torn between new opportunities (of Broadway stardom and marriage to a rich stage producer) and loyalty to Danny, who is reluctant to let her go.
