Through the Night (1975)

Written by Trevor Griffiths, this is one of the first plays to have put the experience of having cancer on screen.

Film details

Based on the harrowing story of writer Trevor Griffiths’ then-wife’s experience of being diagnosed and treated for breast cancer, this was one of the first plays to place the subject in the public domain and is credited with having changed attitudes and practices across the NHS.

Alison Steadman gives a heartrending performance as she encounters the dehumanising insensitivities of the system as it existed in 1975.
