Synopsis
Mrs Stanger, deserted by her brutal husband, is consoled by their small daughter. In order to pacify his mistress, Evangeline, Sir James Hall proposes to substitute their child for his lawful heir, so that the former may enjoy the advantages of legitimacy. But after all the plans have been made, Evangeline finds she cannot bear to part with her child. She persuades Mrs Stanger, who has been engaged as nurse, to make a pretence of exchanging the babies whilst in reality each mother keeps her own. (752). 35mm.
This section appears to be the beginning of the story which continues when the children are grown up.
