Drama. On the Florida coast, a Greek family called Petrakis make their living diving for and selling sponges. The rival Rhys family, (non-Greek, known as 'conches'), steal a haul of their sponges, and a bitter rivalry arises, complicated by the budding romance between the son and daughter of the warring families, Tony Petrakis and Gwyneth Rhys. It seems the only way for the Petrakises to recoup their losses is for them to dive out at the dangerous 12-mile reef, where they lost a son not long ago. It is a place of great underwater bounty and beauty, but also peril, with deadly coral to snare or even cut divers' air hoses, sea-life ranging from fish to octopuses, and the chance of the bends, the result of a too-fast resurfacing often causing agonising death.
