Synopsis
Records the lives and sufferings of the people of the Japanese fishing village of Minamata, since the first outbreak in 1953 of a disease diagnosed as mercury poisoning, caused by the assimilation of inorganic mercury compounds discharged into the sea by industrial waste from a nearby aceto-aldehyde plant. Shows an unsuccessful attempt by local fishermen to break into the plant and stop production, and the gradual development of organised dissent.
