The Cat and the Canary (1981)

Film details

Light-hearted thriller. Six surviving relatives of the eccentric millionaire Cyrus West gather at his country mansion one stormy night, along with West's family lawyer, Allison Crosby, and loyal maid, Mrs Pleasant, for the reading of his will, which turns out to be presented by West himself on an old black and white film projected over the course of dinner. The will leaves everything to one beneficiary, which naturally proves unpopular, and West's film reveals that there is a second choice if, during the night, the first should die or be found to be insane. A man arrives on horseback and explains that he is Hendricks, in charge of the local asylum for the criminally insane, from which a madman known as the Cat has escaped. So called because he believes he is a cat, this dangerous killer has claw-like nails and is liable to tear his victims' flesh from their bones. The man warns everyone to be on the alert, as the Cat may well try to enter the house. Soon thereafter, members of the household start to disappear, and all the signs do indeed indicate that a dangerous madman is on the prowl in the house.
