Irène Jacob won the Best Actress award at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival for her portrayal of Weronika and Véronique, two girls who appear identical but are unrelated. One lives in France, one in Poland, and both are struggling through life as they separately attempt to make it as singers. The two never meet but the influence they have on each other is strikingly portrayed in this ethereal and melancholic film that helps raise questions about free will and our place in the world.
