The story of how Princess Sophia (Dietrich) became Catherine the Great. Young and naïve at the outset, Sophia’s marriage to the foolish Grand Duke Peter (Jaffe) teaches her to grow up quickly. As her appetite for Russian soldiers increases, so does her love for her country. After her son is born, and the old empress dies, Sophia begins a plot that will see her ascend to the throne, to take control of her life and her country.
