This gangster movie, taken out of its urban context and set in the bleak sierras, is a superior vehicle for Bogart’s special blend of cynicism, professionalism and vulnerability, here elegaically embodied as doomed desperado Roy ‘Mad Dog’ Earle, meeting his death in the eponymous grey cliffs that rank among Walsh’s most memorably symbolic locations.
