Cassavetes’ second independent film chronicles the events leading to a marital crisis. Sexual indiscretion, emotional abandon, guilt and recrimination form the peaks and troughs of a surging, seemingly chaotic narrative which feels — thanks to superbly nuanced performances and long takes consisting largely of black and white close-ups — as real as life itself.
