Head of Conservation

Charles has worked at the BFI for 28 years and, in his current role as Head of Conservation, has primary responsibility for leading the technical teams who preserve and make accessible the extensive and diverse film and television collections within the BFI National Archive. Significant recent projects that Charles has contributed to include: creation of the BFI Master Film Store; restoration of Alfred Hitchcock’s first nine films and transformation of the BFI’s film, audio and video laboratory operations to meet the challenges of a digital world. Charles is currently heavily involved in the BFI’s Unlocking Film Heritage project, leading initiatives to further enhance digital capability and infrastructure for preservation and access.
